Course Outline

This qualification will suit you if you are, or wish to become a qualified educator in children’s services – responsible for planning, implementing and managing programs in accordance with licensing, accreditation and duty of care requirements. At this level, qualified educators have responsibility for the supervision of other staff members and volunteers. In most states it is the highest qualification required for director or service manager level in children’s service center-based care.

The completion of this course may lead you to jobs such as:

This course will be delivered and assessed via classroom delivery, simulated environments, work-based training, portfolios, presentations, knowledge questions, and written assessments.

    WAIFS’ Entry Requirements:

    Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who hold:

    • CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

    Or

    • CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

    Alternatively, Individuals may hold:

    • An Australian Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care

    Or

    • An Australian Diploma of Certificate III in Children’s Services

    And

    • Demonstrate at least 12 months of cumulative employment (full-time equivalent) within the last five (5) years in a regulated education and care service in Australia, supported by verifiable evidence

    Or

    • Hold the CHCSS00147 Entry into Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

    Compulsory work-based training (WBT) forms part of this course. Students of this course should be physically able to undertake the requirements of WBT. Please refer to the unit details for specific requirements. As a minimum a student should be able to stand, move around and lift objects which may be heavy following work, health and safety practices.

  • Work-based Placement

    All students of the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care will undertake a minimum of 280 hours of work-based training, linked with a number of units of competency in the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care program. Students will undertake work-based training placements in Regulated Education & Care Services and work alongside qualified professionals. Students are supervised during these placements by WAIFS’ trainers and designated supervisors at the host employer.

    WAIFS uses the 3rd Party Reports merely as supplementary evidence and Competent/Not Yet Competent decisions are made by WAIFS’ assessors only. Students must ensure that the following (if applicable) are completed prior to commencement of work based training:

    1. Police Clearances (international and Australian Federal)
    2. Working with Children Check
    3. Health Checks
    4. Immunisation etc. (if applicable) are completed and original documents are sighted by the host employer advanced of commencement of work base training placement

    Students should note that Work-Based training is compulsory for all students of this course. A full certificate for this course cannot be obtained without successful completion of work-based training, along with all other required assessments. 

    Work-based training placements in industry are generally arranged by WAIFS’ work-based placement coordinators who have strong links with industry. Further information on work-based training can be found by reading our Work Placement FAQs available here

  • Pathways/Articulation

    Successful completion of this qualification gives you a pathway into other Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree qualifications within the Childcare Sector. You may be able to receive exemptions from some subjects based on this qualification. The level of articulation to other universities or RTO’s may vary, so you should apply to the institute of your choice well in advance of completion of your qualification at WAIFS.

  • Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) Requirements

    At the successful completion of this course at WAIFS, students should be operating at the LLN levels available here. For an explanation of the levels, please refer to the ACSF Performance Indicators.

    Students will need to meet the minimum LLND requirements outlined in the policy to be able to finalise enrolment in their chosen course/s at WAIFS. Please refer to WAIFS’ PP018 – Language, Literacy, Numeracy Digital Capability Policy located here.

    Where a student applies to enrol at WAIFS and is unable to meet the minimum entrance requirements, WAIFS will liaise with the student and their education/migration agent and/or their guardian (as applicable) to recommend an appropriate alternative course/s of study (as applicable).

    Learners at all AQF levels should possess the following Digital Capabilities:

    • Open and use a computer application (e.g. Web Browser)
    • Navigate a website by following instructions and following website “links”
    • Type and edit text e.g. for short answer assessment questions
    • Follow more than one instruction successfully in written format
